CLEAN BEFORE YOU KEEP
Snearheads, don't be lazy bones! Dirt and muck build-up over time and become permanent. Clean them immediately after each use! Dust them off. Grab a clean wet cloth, some soapy water and take-out the grime from your daily grind.
For heavy use and stubborn dirt, you may want to refer to these, in-depth cleaning guide from Nike.
TO BOX OR NOT TO BOX.
The original boxes, which comes along with your sneakers are cheap, smelly and not sturdy. Keep your sneaker collection in their original boxes, and stock them, one after the other -- you end up squashing your precious collection.
Plus, you cannot appreciate those beautiful works of art, if they're hidden in ugly generic boxes. What's the point of collecting them, right?
Transparent plastic boxes usually available from Japanese stores are a good start and reasonably-priced bet. They're lasting and gives easy access, because you can see them. You can buy them online at q010 or at Muji.
If you have extra dough, why not have someone custom-made acrylic boxes. It will display your kicks like museum-pieces!
Word of caution: If you intend to re-sell your sneakers, by all means, keep the original box, as having it adds value to your stash.
THE SUN IS NOT YOUR FRIEND
Remember your old school PE shoes that you've outgrown yet you don't want to discard? It's had turned yellowish. UV light and oxygen causes your shoes to yellow. Keep them out of the sun during storage.
YOU CRACK ME UP
You're in the mall, and wearing your rarely-worn limited edition, when suddenly, one of the soles cracks and starts to fall apart. Your shoe has become a crocodile with a gnarling mouth. Talk about your most embarrassing moment!
Prevent this cracking - by wearing your treasured collections once in awhile. Keep the oxygen molecules going. Exclusively "storing" your shoes actually shortens their lifespan.
